What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

The short answer

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation: the practice of influencing what generative AI systems know and say about your business across the whole information environment they draw on, not only your own website. It is broader than answer engine optimisation, less precise, and — because no platform publishes its selection rules — necessarily an exercise in improving evidence rather than guaranteeing output.

Why a second acronym exists

AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably, which causes confusion. The distinction that makes them both useful is one of scope. AEO is mostly about your own material: making your pages extractable, quotable and unambiguous. GEO is about the wider pool of information a generative system draws on when it forms a view of your business.

That pool includes your website, but also everything else: industry directories and registers, professional bodies, news coverage, documentation, forums, review platforms, public records, and whatever the model absorbed during training. GEO accepts that most of that material is not yours to edit, and asks what you can nonetheless influence.

Be aware that the terminology is unsettled. Some practitioners use GEO as an umbrella term covering AEO; some vendors use whichever word is in fashion. Judge any advice by what it actually asks you to do, not by the acronym on the slide.

A third term, AI visibility, is sometimes used for the same territory. We use it for the outcome rather than the method: whether assistants actually find you, describe you correctly and recommend you. AEO and GEO are two kinds of work; AI visibility is the thing you measure afterwards.

How a generative system builds its picture of you

Without claiming knowledge of any specific platform’s internals, the publicly described architecture of these systems has two broad layers, and they behave very differently.

  • Internal knowledge: patterns absorbed when the model was trained. Broad, confident, sometimes out of date, and not something you can update on request.
  • Retrieval: material fetched at the moment of asking — search results, specific pages, connected data sources. Fresher, more specific, and the layer most responsive to work you do now.

What that implies for the work

Because the internal layer is slow and closed, GEO concentrates on the retrieval layer and on the durable, repeated signals that eventually make their way into both. In practice that means less emphasis on clever page-level tactics and more on the consistency and corroboration of plain facts about your business.

It also means accepting a longer feedback loop than digital marketers are used to. A corrected listing may change what a retrieval-based assistant says within weeks. It may take far longer to change an assertion that sits in a model’s internal knowledge, and no platform publishes a schedule for when that happens.

There is a useful consequence of that asymmetry: effort spent on durable, verifiable facts outlasts effort spent on anything clever. A register entry that is correct today is still correct when the next model is built, whereas a tactic aimed at a particular system’s current behaviour has a short and unpredictable shelf life.

The levers that are actually available

Ranked roughly by how reliably they help, and without promising any particular outcome:

  • Entity consistency. One spelling of your name, one description of what you do, one service area, one set of contact details, everywhere they appear. Contradiction is the most common self-inflicted problem.
  • A canonical source of truth. A page on your own site that states the facts a system would want — who you are, what you do and do not do, where you operate, since when, under what credentials — written plainly enough to be quoted.
  • Independent corroboration. Substantive mentions in places that are not yours: registers, professional bodies, legitimate industry publications, genuine editorial coverage. The point is agreement between independent sources, not volume.
  • Being quotable on specific questions. Clear, self-contained passages on the narrow topics you genuinely own. This is where GEO and AEO meet.
  • Freshness. Visible dates, retired services actually removed, changes reflected promptly. Stale contradictions are read as uncertainty.
  • Retrieval access. A decision, made deliberately, about which AI crawlers may fetch your pages — and a check that nothing is blocking the ones you want.

Tactics to avoid

Two categories are worth naming. The first is manufactured consensus: bulk low-quality listings, paid mentions dressed as editorial, fabricated reviews, networks of near-identical pages. Beyond the ethical problem, these are the patterns every platform has spent years learning to discount, and they leave a mess that is expensive to unwind.

The second is attempting to instruct the model through your content — hidden text, instructions aimed at crawlers, prompt-injection style phrasing buried in a page. Treat it as both ineffective and reputationally risky: platforms actively defend against it, and a page engineered to manipulate an assistant is hard to defend to a customer who finds it.

The honest framing is unglamorous. You are assembling better evidence about a real business. You are not programming an output, and anyone who tells you they can guarantee one does not know something the rest of the industry does not.

A simple test helps when assessing any proposed GEO tactic: would you be comfortable if a customer saw exactly what you had done, and would it still look sensible if no AI system existed? Work that passes both questions is usually just good business communication. Work that fails either is a liability waiting to be found.

How GEO fits with everything else

Think of it as three concentric jobs. AEO makes your own pages extractable. GEO makes the wider record about you consistent and corroborated. AI visibility is the outcome you measure — whether assistants actually find you, describe you correctly and recommend you.

None of the three is finished work. Services change, people leave, coverage areas expand, and every one of those changes creates a new contradiction somewhere in the record unless someone is responsible for keeping it current. GEO, done properly, is closer to records management than to campaign work.
