What is AI visibility?

The short answer

AI visibility is whether AI assistants identify your business, describe it accurately and include it when people ask buying questions in your category. It is not a ranking position. An AI answer usually names a small handful of businesses rather than listing ten links, so you are either part of that answer or absent from it entirely.

AI visibility in one sentence

AI visibility is the answer to a simple question: when somebody asks an AI assistant for help choosing a business like yours, does your business come up — and is what the assistant says about it true?

The phrase covers both halves of that question. The first half is presence: whether you are named at all. The second half is representation: whether the description attached to your name would make a buyer trust you. A business can do well on one and badly on the other, and the two problems have completely different fixes.

By "AI assistant" we mean any system that answers a question in its own words instead of handing back a list of links — the well-known chat assistants, the AI summaries that now sit above ordinary search results, and the answer features built into browsers, phones and productivity tools.

The three questions it breaks down into

AI visibility is easier to act on when you split it into three plainer questions, because each one points at different work.

  1. Does AI know you? Whether your business is identified at all when a relevant question is asked.
  2. What does AI say about you? Whether the description — services, location, specialisms, credentials — is accurate and complete.
  3. Does AI recommend you? Whether you are put forward as a good option, rather than mentioned in passing near the end of an answer.

Why the distinction between mention and recommendation matters

Being mentioned and being recommended are not the same thing, and buyers read the difference instantly. "Several firms operate in that area, including yours" is a mention. "For that kind of project, the firm most often suggested is yours, because it specialises in exactly this work" is a recommendation.

Mentions tend to come from being present in the underlying sources. Recommendations tend to come from something more specific: a clear, repeated, corroborated signal about what you are unusually good at. That is why a business with a well-known name can be mentioned everywhere and still lose the recommendation to a smaller competitor with a sharper, better-documented specialism.

Where AI visibility actually happens

It is tempting to picture one chat window, but AI answers are assembled in several different places, and each draws on a slightly different mix of information.

  • Conversational assistants, where somebody describes a problem and asks who can solve it.
  • AI summaries above search results, which usually pull from pages the search index already holds.
  • Comparison and shortlisting prompts — "compare the three best options near me" — where the assistant builds a small table or list.
  • Local and map-style questions, which lean heavily on business listings and address data.
  • Assistants built into browsers and operating systems, which often read the page the person is already looking at.

Why being absent costs more than ranking tenth

In a page of search results, position ten is weak but survivable: the listing is still on the page, and a determined buyer can scroll. An AI answer has no page two. If three businesses are named and you are not one of them, you were not outranked — you were left out of the conversation.

Follow-up questions narrow things further. Once somebody asks "which of those is best for a small business?", the assistant is working from the shortlist it already produced. Businesses that were never on that shortlist are not reconsidered. The first answer quietly sets the boundaries of everything that follows.

So the effect on a business tends to be binary rather than gradual. Between ranking fifth and ranking fifteenth there is a difference of degree. Between being named and not being named there is a difference of kind, and the buyer who never sees your name does not know there was an option they failed to consider.

What AI visibility is not

It is not a ranking you can look up. There is no public index of who appears in AI answers, no equivalent of a rank-tracking dashboard fed directly by the platforms, and no login that shows you your own position.

It is not something you buy your way into organically. Some platforms are introducing advertising formats, and those are clearly separate commercial products; inclusion in the answer itself is not a placement on sale.

And it is not fixed. Generative systems are non-deterministic: ask the same question twice and the wording, and sometimes the businesses named, will differ. Answers also vary by platform, model version, location, prompt wording and whatever the platform remembers about the person asking. Any honest reading of AI visibility is a pattern across many samples, not a single screenshot.

What you can actually control

You cannot edit a model, and no vendor — including us — can tell you the exact rules a platform uses to choose businesses. What you can control is the evidence those systems draw on: the clarity of your own website, the consistency of your core facts everywhere they appear, and whether independent sources say anything substantive about what you do.

That is the practical work, and it is covered step by step in our guide to appearing in AI search. Measuring whether it is working is a separate discipline, covered in our article on measuring AI visibility. If the terminology around all this — AEO, GEO, answer engines — is what is confusing you, start with the explainer on AEO instead.
