AI visibility

Being part of the answer

A search results page lists ten options and lets the customer choose. An AI answer chooses for them, and names three. This page explains what decides which three.

What AI visibility actually means

AI visibility is whether AI assistants and answer engines identify your business, describe it correctly, and include it when they answer the questions your customers ask before they buy.

It has three parts, and businesses tend to be strong at one and weak at another. Being known is whether you surface at all. Being described accurately is whether what surfaces is true and complete. Being recommended is whether the system moves from mentioning you to actively suggesting you. A business can be well known and rarely recommended — that is the most common pattern we see, and it is a content problem rather than a technical one.

Why the shape of the answer changes the stakes

On a results page, being tenth still earns a click occasionally, and a customer sees the whole competitive set. In a synthesised answer, the customer usually sees two or three businesses and no indication of what was left out. There is no page two. Absence is invisible to the customer and expensive to you.

The second change is attribution. An answer engine paraphrases. If your page is the source but your name is not in the sentence, you have supplied the answer and received none of the credit — which is why citation behaviour is scored separately from visibility.

The mechanism

Five things have to go right before you are named

Nobody outside the platforms knows their exact selection rules. What is observable is the sequence a business has to survive to appear in an answer at all.

  1. 01

    Identification

The system has to be confident your business is a distinct entity: a specific organisation, at a specific place, offering specific things. Structured data, consistent naming and corroborating profiles do this work. Ambiguity is resolved by omission.

  2. 02

    Retrieval

Your content has to be reachable and indexed. A site-wide noindex, a blanket crawler block, or pages that exist only behind JavaScript that never renders will keep you out regardless of how good the business is.

  3. 03

    Extraction

The system needs a passage it can lift. Sections that open with a direct answer in 40–60 words are quotable; sections that open with a brand statement are not. This is the difference between being read and being used.

  4. 04

    Corroboration

Claims confirmed in more than one independent place are treated with more confidence than claims made only on your own site. This is why directory listings, association registers and genuine editorial mentions matter more than they did for rankings.

  5. 05

    Selection

Finally the system chooses which two or three businesses to name. It favours the ones it can describe specifically and confidently. Specificity — project sizes, price ranges, service areas, credentials — is what turns a candidate into a recommendation.

In practice

Where the work actually is

In most businesses the fixes are unglamorous, cheap and already overdue.

Technical

  • Organization and LocalBusiness schema, complete
  • sameAs links to every profile you control
  • A sitemap, canonical tags, no stray noindex
  • A deliberate decision about AI crawlers

Content

  • Question headings drawn from real buyer language
  • A direct answer in the first 40–60 words
  • Specifics: price ranges, timeframes, service areas
  • A service page per service, not one combined page

Authority

  • Google Business Profile claimed and complete
  • Industry association and licensing registers
  • Genuine editorial or partner mentions
  • Identical business details everywhere
