What an "answer engine" means here
An answer engine is any system whose output is an answer rather than a list of places you might find one. A chat assistant is an answer engine. So is the AI summary block above search results, the spoken reply from a voice assistant, and the in-product assistant that tells a user which provider to call.
The common thread is extraction. These systems do not hand the whole page to the reader; they lift the part that answers the question, compress it, and present it in their own words. AEO is the work of making sure that when the lifting happens, the passage taken from your site is correct, complete and recognisably yours.
Where the idea came from
AEO is not brand new. The discipline grew out of years of optimising for featured snippets — the boxed answers that search engines began showing above results — and for voice assistants, which could only read one answer aloud. Both rewarded the same things: a direct answer near the top, a question-shaped heading, a self-contained paragraph.
Generative assistants raised the stakes rather than changing the principle. They can synthesise from several sources at once, paraphrase heavily, and drop the link entirely. So the craft shifted from "own the snippet" to "be the clearest, most quotable source on this specific question".
That history explains why a lot of AEO advice sounds familiar. The things that won a featured snippet — a crisp definition, a short ordered list, a table with real headers — are the same things that make a passage easy to lift and reuse. What genuinely changed is that your material can now be used without your site ever being visited.
What AEO work actually looks like
Most of it is unglamorous editorial and technical hygiene rather than anything exotic.
- Answer first. State the answer in the opening sentences, then explain, qualify and expand. A reader skims it; an extraction system can use it.
- Question-shaped headings. Use the words a customer would use, as a real heading, so the relevant section is easy to locate.
- Self-contained passages. Each section should make sense if it is lifted out on its own, which means avoiding "as mentioned above" and undefined pronouns.
- Explicit facts. Service areas, what you do and do not do, qualifications, how you charge. Vague copy cannot be extracted into a confident answer.
- Structured data. Schema markup — a standard vocabulary for labelling what a page is about — so organisation, location, service and FAQ details are machine-readable rather than inferred.
- Clean, readable HTML. Real headings and lists, text that does not depend on a script to appear, tables that are actual tables.
- Crawlability. A sitemap, a sane robots.txt, and a deliberate decision about which automated crawlers you allow.
Writing for extraction without writing badly
The most common mistake is to hear "write for machines" and produce something nobody would read: stacked keywords, repeated phrasing, a thin FAQ bolted to the bottom of every page. That fails on its own terms, because an answer engine is summarising meaning, not counting words.
A more useful test is whether a knowledgeable stranger could read one of your sections aloud as a complete answer. If they would have to add context first, the section is not self-contained. If they would have to soften a claim, the claim is not safe to be quoted. Good AEO copy tends to read as unusually clear prose, not as something optimised.
The other discipline is restraint about claims. Anything you state plainly can be repeated back to a buyer as fact, with your name attached. That is an argument for writing only what you can stand behind — and for being explicit about limits, service areas and exclusions.
What AEO cannot do
AEO improves your own material. It does not reach inside a model, it does not guarantee inclusion in any answer, and it cannot compensate on its own for a business that has almost no presence anywhere else on the web. Nobody outside the platforms knows how selection actually works, and any vendor claiming a guaranteed placement is describing something they cannot control.

A reasonable starting point
If you want one page to practise on, choose the page that describes your single most commercially important service. Rewrite the opening so it answers the obvious question in two sentences. Break the rest into question-shaped sections that stand alone. State your service area and your exclusions explicitly. Add organisation and service structured data. Then leave it alone for a few weeks.
That page becomes your template and your control. When you later extend the approach across the site, you will have a reference point for what changed — which matters, because measurement in this field is a sampling exercise rather than a lookup.
Resist rolling the approach out across fifty pages at once. Extraction rewards unambiguous answers to specific questions, so ten pages that each settle one thing tend to outperform fifty that all describe the category in general — and a smaller set is something you can realistically keep accurate as your services change.
